SECRETS ON THE LAKE

DINING ON THE DECK

In 1992 both Cath and Rob were enrollled at UQ and to support them George worked 4 days a week at his brother’s business Sid’s Colonial in West End Brisbane. Sid’s sold new and second hand doors and materials to repair Old Queenslanders. George was home 3 days a week, and, in order to bare being away, he spent those 3 days building The Boathouse now known as The Lakehouse.

Adrian, a work acquaintance, helped by drawing a sketch literally in 5 minutes, and, George virtually built what he drew. Apart from the verandah flooring and a portion of the verandah rails, all timbers were recycled from our stockpiles of old railway building materials. Originally it was faithfully painted in the traditional colours, but recently it was repainted and re-roofed with very tasteful wedding-like colours. Now 32 years later it still nestles in our gardens with a direct view to the lake and our beautiful jetty.

George and I love The Lakehouse. Every care was taken to create a beautifully appointed building which we now use for functions such as Lakeside Interludes, elopements, weddings, vow renewals, photo shoots and an occasional seminar or remembrance service along with spreading ashes or planting memorial trees.
