I have always loved Art. I love how it helps us make sense of this crazy world, and how it connects with us all in different ways. In fact, for many years I was an Art teacher at Maleny High School doing my bit to instill the magic of Art in our younger generations. Over the years I have found much joy in dabbling with pottery and painting and found a peaceful connection in honing my skills with pencil drawing local characters, ancestors and our lush landscapes in graphite and charcoal. My father was a published author, and Georges father an accomplished painter, so I guess it is no coincidence that our children also have this creative gene! I am proud of my daughter Cath who is a nationally recognised contemporary sculptor, and my son Rob who can manifest magic in his cedar wood works… and guests would be familiar with quite a few of their works adorning our gallery walls, walkways and treehouses here at Secrets on the Lake.
This celebration of Art in all its forms is something that George and I wanted to share with and create for our guests to enjoy while staying in our luxury treehouses. To this end, we have aimed to support the many amazing artists who have made the Sunshine Coast Hinterland their home. We are blessed to have such a creative hub up here in the hills! We wanted to put this blog up to thank these amazing artists for their contributions and friendships, and to let you know what to look out for when you are enjoying the magic of your treehouse on the shores of magnificent Lake Baroon.
Ralf Driessen’s creative wrought iron works are themed for each cabin and have been lovingly twisted into amazing bedheads and ballustrades. His delicate touch and creative eye make each feature striking and yet deceptively simple. Ralf moved to Victoria a number of years ago, but we keep in touch and you can find more out about him here www.facebook.com/pg/metalmorphosisau
Jack Wilm’s coffee tables, mirrors and cedar creations are stunning! A many time winner of the Maleny Wood Show and other contemporary carving competitions, we are blessed with our long standing friendship with Jack, and his many beautiful works that have been integral in developing our unique Secrets style. We feature his creations in Secrets Art Gallery and love the excuse to call him up when a lucky guest purchases a piece of his Secrets for their homes. Jack is contactable at www.cedarcreations.com.au
Lindsay Muir’s intricate ceramic friezes depict our rainforest plants and inhabitants with such personality and amazing detail that they are a joyful addition to each cabin, and a popular seller in Secrets Art Gallery. Marion Uithol is one of the best leadlight artists I have encountered over my many years walking this planet. Her leadlights are positioned in the bedroom wall and are themed for each treehouse. There is a little glowlight you can turn on from your bedside table to create a magical night time glow through her creations… my favourite is Mr Lizard leaning back on a tree trunk with a bottle of plum wine in his hand! Recently her artworks have taken a different turn and I find her sculptures fascinating! You can check her out here www.facebook.com/pg/MarionJUithol
Marc Kalifa, a talented local Witta based glass maker, has made our amazing bedside lamps and oil lamps that rest in Ralf’s wrought iron bracketing by your treehouse’s sunken spa. We have a number of his glass pieces for sale in Secrets Art Gallery… perfect to brighten any room! He is contactable at www.artsconnectinc.com.au/profile/marc.kalifa
Last but not least is Cathy Lawley, whose Fried Mudd creations celebrate our native animals with whimsy and her own unique style. Her light shades add to the unique theme in each treehouse and her lamps adorn the elevated carved wooden boardwalks that lead you through the lush rainforest and ancient vines to your treehouse door. Her works are also popular items in Secrets Gallery, and a perfect size to take a momento of your stay in Secrets home with you. She is contactable at www.friedmudd.com
